Green Power.
On the Island of Lana‘i, Castle & Cooke is exploring green power - electricity supplied from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. The company has built one of the nation’s largest solar photovoltaic farms and is conducting testing for potential wind turbines. Green power helps improve air quality and protects the environment because it is a cleaner, non-polluting source of energy. It also stops the release of gases that contribute to global warming and reduces Hawai‘i's reliance on fossil fuels.
As commercial construction and development continues, we are working hard to have our buildings LEED certified. In the United States and in a number of other countries around the world, LEED certification is the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. Achieving LEED certification is the best way to demonstrate that your building project is truly "green." For Castle & Cooke, our newest commercial project Castle & Cooke Self Storage, located in Mililani Mauka has been designed with LEED certification in mind.
The LEED green building rating system -- developed and administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington D.C.-based, nonprofit coalition of building industry leaders -- is designed to promote design and construction practices that increase profitability while reducing the negative environmental impacts of buildings and improving occupant health and well-being.
As a company, we have always taken our role as stewards of the land seriously. For over 157 years, Castle & Cooke has been the beneficiary of vast land holdings first through agriculture and now residential and commercial development. However, it’s important for us to give back. Through our corporate land stewardship program, acres of pristine forests and farmland have been dedicated to nature conservancy as well as for public parks, schools and recreation centers. In the workplace, Castle & Cooke has also implemented a corporate recycling program and volunteer projects to clean, preserve and protect our natural resources.
